A registered agent is an individual or entity designated by a corporation, limited liability company or limited partnership to collect legal documents and notifications on behalf of the entity. If you are filing your entity for the first time in Illinois or you are an out of state entity filing to transact business in Illinois, you are required to appoint a registered agent with an office located in Illinois. 805 ILCS 5/5.05.

Before the Illinois Secretary of State will accept your filing, you will need to include registered agent information on your Articles of Incorporation, Articles of Organization, Certificate of Limited Partnership or Authority to Transact Business in Illinois, depending upon what entity you are filing.
